Sephiria Dagger Guide: Fury, Trance, Fire Dagger Route

The short answer to "is Dagger good in Sephiria": it is the class most players struggle with, but it is not the class TEAM HORAY has neglected. Two patches — one from Early Access, one from three weeks ago — did more work on Dagger's kit than on almost any other weapon, and both changes point the same direction: closing the gap between committing to an attack and getting to act again.

The resource layer no other class has

Dagger runs on three meters instead of the usual MP bar alone: Fury, Trance, and Focus. A border cue tells you when Fury's block window is live, which matters because Fury is what turns Parry from a defensive option into a damage one. Trance is a temporary state some upgrades grant a chance to enter on any attack, and Focus underlies the class's higher-commitment specials. Compared with Great Sword, whose whole kit revolves around one charged special, Dagger asks you to track three interacting resources at once — which is a real part of why it has a reputation for being unforgiving.

Why the community calls it the hardest class

This isn't a design statement from TEAM HORAY — it's community consensus, and a strong one. A dedicated feedback thread argues Dagger's melee range is "abysmal" next to Great Sword, Staff, and Crossbow, and that the invincibility frames on Parry and Trance aren't generous enough to compensate once Hard Mode tiers climb into the 30–50 range. That's a specific, falsifiable claim about scaling, not a vague complaint, which is why the site treats it as worth repeating rather than filtering out.

TEAM HORAY has responded to exactly this complaint twice. Patch 0.11.5, during Early Access, cut Parry's cost from 10 MP to 6, raised Parry's damage by 30%, and gave every Dagger normal attack a flat +20% final damage bonus — a rework aimed squarely at making the class's core defensive tool pull its weight offensively. More recently, 1.0.26 let the Dagger's Dash Attack chain directly into Special Attack: Parry and Special Attack: Fury — the first weapon-rule buff of the whole 1.0 era, as opposed to a bug fix. Every earlier post-launch patch only repaired weapons that were misbehaving; this one changed how the kit connects. Dash-in openings now flow straight into Dagger's defensive and offensive specials instead of requiring a beat of dead time in between, which is a direct answer to the range and commitment complaints above.

The three upgrade routes worth knowing

Dagger's tree branches into distinct identities rather than incremental buffs, the same pattern documented on the all weapons page for every class:

  • Fire Dagger changes the special attack into a five-dagger throw, trading Parry's single-target defense for ranged burn pressure. The line continues into Burning Fang, where thrown daggers apply Burn and weapon attacks gain Fire Damage scaling — the route documented in full on the Burning Fang build page.
  • Alpine Edelweiss converts your normal attack into Shuriken Throw, pushing the class further toward a ranged identity than its base kit suggests.
  • Difficult Trial removes Parry entirely in exchange for a 20% chance to gain Trance on any attack — a genuine subclass swap rather than a stat trade, in line with how the game's upgrade system generally works: a large fraction of upgrades replace your normal attack, dash attack, or special outright instead of adjusting numbers.

Also worth checking before you commit dice at an Anvil: 1.0.19 added four new Dagger upgrades in a single patch, the same count Crossbow and Staff received and four times what Great Sword got that update. Whatever route you're planning, walk the Journal's Weapons tab first — the tree changed meaningfully more recently than most players assume.

What patch history says about power level

Two specific numeric changes are worth citing directly rather than paraphrasing, because they show the direction of travel rather than a snapshot: Lightning Dagger's extra damage rose from 20% to 25% of Lightning Damage in 1.0.19, and the Parry rework in 0.11.5 (10→6 MP, +30% damage) predates 1.0 but still defines how the ability feels today — nothing since has reverted it. Between those two changes and the 1.0.26 dash-chain buff, the pattern across the class's history is consistently upward, even though community sentiment about its floor-30-plus performance in Hard Mode hasn't caught up yet.

Pairing Dagger with a build

If you're deciding whether to invest in Dagger at all, the honest framing from the class's own devotees is that it rewards route commitment more than most weapons: half-measures leave you with neither Parry's old defensive value nor a finished offensive identity. The Fire Dagger → Burning Fang line is the best-documented full route, built around frequent contact and escalating Burn rather than one large hit — see the dedicated build page for the talent spread, artifact priorities, and the pivot conditions that tell you when to abandon it. For the underlying tag thresholds that route's Ember pieces are chasing, the artifact tags page covers what each combo family actually pays out.

If your priority is surviving Hard Mode's higher tiers rather than damage, cross-reference Dagger's i-frame limitations against the approach on the tier 50 evasion tank build — it's built on Great Sword rather than Dagger, and the contrast is instructive about where each weapon's defense actually comes from. Talent allocation for either route follows the same breakpoints covered on the talents page.

What we're not printing

We have no verified per-tier win-rate data for Dagger against other classes — TEAM HORAY has never published one, and "hardest class" here is attributed community sentiment, not a ranking we're asserting as fact. The exact i-frame duration on Parry and Trance is also not confirmed: the feedback thread that raises the complaint doesn't give frame counts, and no patch note we've checked states one either.
