Sephiria Crossbow Guide: Magazine, Reload, Frost Veil
Crossbow is the only one of Sephiria's six weapons built around a magazine, and that single fact explains almost everything else about how it plays: a finite ammo count, a dedicated reload key, and a special attack that most of its upgrade tree exists to reshape. Players report ranged builds having a better win rate generally, which tracks in a game with 60-plus enemy types and a lot of contact damage — but the class only works once you understand what actually happens when the magazine runs dry.

What the base weapon does
TEAM HORAY described the design intent plainly when Crossbow was announced: increase fire rate and ammo capacity to spray arrows, or lay mines to hit several enemies at once. That's the whole kit in one sentence — a magazine-fed normal attack, a dash attack that places a mine, and an MP-funded special bolt that reloads or pierces depending on the branch you take. Unlocking it costs the Ranged Weapon Training node in the Destiny Inscription tree, the same structure that gates all five non-starting weapons.
Crossbow shipped in patch 0.7.35 with 16 enhancement tree variants — 6 Tier 2 and 10 Tier 3 — which is the clearest public statement TEAM HORAY has made about the shape of any weapon's upgrade tree. Every upgrade in the class carries the Colossal Crossbow: prefix, and per the all weapons page, the tree includes Gunpowder Synthesis, Scattershot Shooter, Frost Veil, Reload Device, Fire Mine, and Rapid Freeze Crystal among its named branches.
The reload problem, and how the tree solves it
Every Crossbow build has to answer one question: what happens when you're empty? The tree offers at least two different answers, and they produce genuinely different playstyles rather than variations on one build.
Reload Device turns the special attack into a high-speed reload instead of a damage tool, trading burst for uptime — a route that rewards pairing with on-hit or attack-speed support elsewhere in the bag, since the special is no longer your damage cooldown. Rapid Freeze Crystal, on the Frost Veil branch, removes magazine consumption entirely while its timed cold-firing state is active, which sidesteps the reload question altogether rather than answering it. A third branch drops the magazine question and goes wide instead: Scattershot Shooter converts the normal shot into a close-range explosion, which functions closer to a shotgun than a rifle and asks you to reposition between magazines rather than fight the reload timer directly.
These are meaningfully different engines, not minor variations of one ranked build — a build leaning on Reload Device plays nothing like one built around Frost Veil's ammo-free window, and picking between them earlier rather than later avoids wasting anvil rerolls on upgrades that don't support your route.
What patch history tells you about the current build
The most recent change to the class is also the most concrete: 1.0.30 gave the Frozen Bow a flat capability buff — its arrows now pass through walls, which removes what was previously its clearest weakness in wall-heavy rooms. That's a meaningful upgrade to an already popular pick, and it's recent enough that guides written before 20 August 2026 won't mention it.
Two smaller items are worth knowing if you're troubleshooting something that feels broken rather than choosing a route: 1.0.23 fixed the Minigun's MP cost applying incorrectly in decimal units below 1, and a Superconductor multiplayer notification issue (relevant if a Storm Cloud-consuming special can't fire) was addressed the same patch window on the Great Sword side, documented on the 1.0.25 to 1.0.30 patch page. Neither is a build decision, but both explain behavior that otherwise looks like a bug in your setup rather than a known one.
Where Crossbow sits among the other five weapons
Unlike Sword & Shield, whose entire identity runs through a single held guard, Crossbow's kit is built from independent, swappable pieces — magazine management, mine placement, and special-attack identity can each be upgraded on separate branches without one determining the others. That modularity is also why "best Crossbow build" doesn't resolve into a single answer the way some classes' does: Reload Device, Frost Veil, and Scattershot Shooter are three different answers to the same magazine problem, and which one fits depends on what the rest of your run's artifact tags are already supporting.
If ranged damage output specifically is what you're chasing, cross-reference the damage types page for how Frost Veil's cold application interacts with Frostbite as a status rather than a flat number — the mechanic underneath "cold support" branches is documented there, not on this page.
What we're not printing
We have no confirmed per-branch DPS figures for Crossbow — TEAM HORAY has published magazine-size and upgrade-count statements, but no numeric damage coefficients for Reload Device, Frost Veil, or Scattershot Shooter specifically, so exact numbers here are not confirmed. Magazine size itself is also version-sensitive: check the current in-game tooltip before committing a Hard Mode run to a specific reload plan, since coefficients can shift between patches without always making the patch notes headline.
