Roughly seventy tablets, and which groupings actually fire an effect.
Tablets are emitters, not equipment
A tablet occupies exactly one cell and projects buff values onto specific other cells. Whatever number lands on a cell becomes the level of the artifact sitting there.
TEAM HORAY confirmed the mechanic in a single patch-note line describing one tablet: "Level +1 is applied to the slots above and below." That is the whole system. Everything else is which cells, how many, and whether the value is positive.
Buy the free node first
Tablets are gated content. Until you purchase the Tablet node in Destiny Inscription — which costs nothing — tablet nodes and tablet objects do not appear in runs at all.
It is the first thing to buy, before talent points, before inventory slots, before a second weapon. Every other part of the build system is downstream of it.
Four families, not seventy items
You do not need to memorise a seventy-item table. Every tablet belongs to one of four behaviour classes, and knowing the class tells you where it can go before you read a number.
Discrete offsets buff specific cells at fixed relative positions — the largest group, with footprints from 1 to 8 cells and a maximum reach of 3.
Line buffs hit an entire row, column or diagonal. Twelve tablets do this, and they are what you build a layout around.
Board parity is a single tablet that covers the whole grid in a chessboard pattern, buffing one colour and debuffing the other. Moving it one cell inverts the entire thing.
Edge-anchored tablets are inactive unless placed on a specific grid edge. Four exist, and misplacing them is the most common layout mistake there is — off their edge they contribute nothing while still consuming a slot.
Negatives are real
Twelve tablets carry negative cells. They are not traps — they usually pay for the debuff with a larger buff elsewhere in the same pattern — but a careless layout with one of them actively lowers your artifact levels rather than merely failing to raise them.
That is why "just fill the grid" does not work here, and why the community built a solver for it.
Rotation is less useful than it looks
Tablets rotate in 90° steps with R, or since 1.0.19 with a middle mouse click. But 18 of the catalogued tablets cannot rotate at all, and another 14 are symmetric enough that only one or two rotations are actually distinct. Spinning most tablets accomplishes nothing.
On the count
TEAM HORAY says "about 70." The most careful open community dataset catalogues 62 with full mechanics, and its maintainer believes at least one is still missing.
We publish both figures rather than picking one, because the developer's own phrasing is approximate and the dataset is demonstrably current — its values for Competition, Wave, Preparation and Daydream match the 1.0.19 patch notes exactly. That agreement is why we are willing to cite it for things TEAM HORAY has never documented.
