Sephiria Sword & Shield Guide: Block, Cleave and Dash Builds
Sword & Shield is the weapon every Sephiria run starts with, and the one the game quietly rebalanced on launch day without telling anyone until the next hotfix. It is also the only class whose best-known builds are about dashing, not swinging: one turns every dash into an ice hammer, the other holds the shield up and never stops moving. This page covers the base kit, the branches worth knowing, the 1.0 changes, and both dash builds — with a clear line between what is confirmed in 1.0 and what is an Early Access memory.
Class overview and the other five weapons: all weapons.

The base kit
The shield's Block is a held guard that drains MP while up, with a Perfect Guard window on well-timed blocks. That single mechanic explains most of the tree: upgrades key off blocking. Protection of the Fuzz halves Block's MP cost on a successful block; Cold Anger gives +20% all damage for 14 seconds after a Perfect Guard; Star's Twinkle reflects 300% of the attacker's damage, 400% on a Perfect Guard.
MP is the resource here, and the Early Access community guide's definition still holds: MP regeneration is stated per 10 seconds, and blocking, specials and spellbooks all draw from the same pool. A shield player who also wants to cast is fighting themselves — which is exactly why the lightning spellbook build lists the lightning Sword & Shield as its "safer" weapon: a 200-MP bag makes both affordable.
Cleave and the launch-day change
The special, Cleave, cost 20 MP through Early Access. The 1.0.21 hotfix disclosed — under the heading "Additional Changes Missing from the 1.0.19 Patch Notes" — that launch had already cut the base cost to 15 MP and made guard frames active from the very start of the animation instead of partway through. Any Early Access guide that calls Cleave expensive or unsafe is describing a weapon that no longer exists.
The other 1.0 fix is Breath of Ice: its "+40% Dash Attack Damage" was really giving +30% until 1.0.22. That matters below, because both dash builds live on dash attack damage.
Branches worth knowing
| Branch | What it turns the weapon into |
|---|---|
| Carrot Sword → Carrotcalibur | Normal attack becomes a five-hit sequence |
| Frost Shard → Glacial Blade / Blizzard's Eve | Cold-damage line; the home of the Blizzard Hammer build |
| Magic Wand line | Converts your attack to Magic Missile, then specialises into lightning, ice or fire |
| Rapier, Unity of Offense and Defense, Tiny Destruction | Named in the community weapon list; we have no documented build for them |
The Guillotine of Bitter Cold deserves a footnote: its UI was labelling the skill "Blizzard Hammer" until 1.0.21. That is worth knowing if you are reading older build posts, because "Blizzard Hammer" is also the name of the artifact the next section is about.
Dash build 1 — Blizzard Hammer
A Korean guide from the 0.7.14–15 era built the class around the Blizzard Hammer artifact, which fires an ice hammer automatically toward the nearest enemy whenever a dash is spent. Its selling points are that the hammer "flies at enemies on its own, so you can concentrate on dodging and it still hits," and that the build needs only two items — Blizzard Hammer and Ice Star — both of rare grade and therefore easy to find.
The guide's numbers, all Early Access: the hammer scaled off 16 + 350% of Cold damage after the 0.7.14 patch (down from 500%), and from that patch it triggers on dash consumption rather than on a specific costume — so the White Wolf costume it originally required is no longer needed. Talents: Willpower 20 so the two artifacts can be carried run to run (the guide calls the carry-over the "dimension pouch" — the Wish Fountain's Early Access form, as far as we can tell); the rest free, with Endure and Wisdom suggested because Blizzard Hammer's required artifact level is a high 9. Miracle: Snowfield Guard or Ice Blacksmith. Costume: not the Elementalist, whose −10 physical damage cripples the early floors that this build has to clear with a plain 20-physical sword.
Two artifacts extend it: one adds a hammer trigger, and a legendary adds two more ("take it on sight, but the build has enough damage without it"). Everything else is #Ice Gear (+15% ice gear damage) and #Glacier (+15 Cold damage) tags. The author's joke is the real warning: "the final boss of this build is not Askard, it's the super-armoured cat mob on stage 2" — the early game is the whole difficulty.
Nothing here is 1.0-confirmed. The artifact exists (1.0.21 references the name), but the 350% coefficient, the level-9 requirement and the trigger rule are 0.7-era claims. We print them as the documented shape of the build, per our standing rule on pre-1.0 values.
Dash build 2 — the infinite-dash shield
A Simplified Chinese guide describes the other approach: hold Block and dash continuously, with a weapon branch that auto-attacks on dash and the White Wolf costume (unlocked by beating Rataka five times) for unlimited dashes. The core artifact makes the shield-dash loop self-sustaining, Willpower keeps it between runs, and remaining points go to MP regeneration and defence. The author is candid that it requires a mouse macro — "if you can't set one up, don't play this" — and that some boss projectiles still have to be dodged manually.
We include it because it documents a real interaction (auto-attack-on-dash plus unlimited dash) rather than for its numbers, which the guide barely gives. Whether the specific branch and artifact survive in 1.0 we have not verified.
Choosing the shield in 1.0
For a first run the reasons to keep the starting weapon are concrete: Cleave is cheap and safe since launch, Perfect Guard has a real upgrade tree behind it, and the Frost Shard line gives Cold damage that the Glacier artifact family — Echo of the Glacier, Feet of the Ice Gull, Eternal Winter — is built to exploit. The beginner guide covers the first two chapters with it; the talents page explains the Endure 5 Foundation tablet that helps any shield run start with a buffed row.
