Sephiria Combos: Artifact Tags, Thresholds, Ingenuity

Last verified 2026-08-10

Two different things in Sephiria get called "combining," and conflating them is the single most common way to misread a build guide.

Combos are artifact tags, counted. Placement is irrelevant. If you hold two #Ember artifacts anywhere in your bag, the Ember combo is active.

Grid combination is tablet buffs, summed per cell. Counting is irrelevant. It is pure geometry.

This page is about the first one. The second lives on the inventory grid page.

How combos activate

A combo "provides additional stats based on the number of artifacts" carrying that tag, and most artifacts in the game now carry one. It fires at a count threshold and then levels up as you add more — combo levels reach at least 10.

Thresholds observed in a real build:

ComboItems needed
Guardian2
Shadow2
Magitech2
Ember2
Glacier2
Elemental2
Lake3

Most sit at 2. That is a low bar, and it is the key to how the system rewards you.

The combo list

Names confirmed in TEAM HORAY's own text: Planet, Storm Cloud, Mystic (Mystery), Magitech, Lake, Academy, Solar Blade, Shadow, Ember, Glacier, Elemental, Curse, Negotiation, Companion, Sturdy, Precision, Windsong, Protection, Alchemy. Player guides add Guardian.

Four of them have published definitions:

  • Elemental — a support combo that enhances your highest elemental attribute.
  • Curse — a support combo built around debuffs.
  • Negotiation — a support combo built around leaf acquisition.
  • Lake — enhances maximum MP and MP-using abilities.
  • Academy — support artifacts for using spellbooks more effectively.

Mystic deserves its own note because it is the one that touches the grid. In its original form it simply increased Max MP. The October 2025 revamp changed it to "a support combo that doubles the level of a random artifact," and by 1.0 the community tooling models it as doubling the net value of up to three chosen cells, negatives included. Those two descriptions — random versus chosen — have never been publicly reconciled, so treat the count of three as the confident part and the selection method as open.

Why breadth beats depth here

The Ingenuity talent at level 20 grants +7% Universal Damage Boost per active combo type (raised from 4%). Per type, not per artifact.

Run the arithmetic. Six combos active at their minimum thresholds is +42% universal damage. Getting six combos to threshold means roughly twelve tagged artifacts, which is a normal mid-run bag. Getting one combo to level 10 means ten-plus artifacts of a single tag, which is a lucky run.

So the advice inverts depending on where you are:

  • Early, without Ingenuity 20: go deep. Two or three tags at real depth, because the individual combo bonuses are what you are actually buying.
  • Late, with Ingenuity 20: go wide. Every additional tag at threshold is another 7% on everything.

Fruit Skewer is the lever for this. It lets you bias which combos' items appear before the run starts — up to six modifiers, eight with the Farmer Squirrel costume. If you are building toward Ingenuity breadth, that is where you set it up.

Bond Artifacts

Bond Artifacts are unique items that connect two combos at once — a direct answer to the breadth problem. Their drop rule was deliberately loosened: they now enter the drop table when one of the two related combos is active, where originally both had to be. Roughly a dozen existed at introduction with five more added later. The Destiny Inscription has a Bond Artifact node that unlocks 23 of them into your pool.

Wisdom level 10, correctly

This is the most-misquoted mechanic in the game, so here is the record.

Before patch 0.10.14, Wisdom 10 read: all artifacts are forced to have a unique effect, duplicates combine and raise the artifact's level by 1, and you gain 1 die on boss kill.

After 0.10.14, the same text plus "The combined Artifact increases the combo by 2 times."

Two important qualifications, both from TEAM HORAY:

  1. In 0.10.16 the developer stated the doubling was "originally planned to be applied to combo-change artifacts as well, but it has been put on hold due to technical issues" — so Chalcedony Key and White Paper do not get it, and the UI had been wrongly displaying that they did.
  2. The current in-game framing is [Unique] Stacking: duplicates are offered and taking one adds a star to the copy you hold.

The shorthand "Wisdom lv10 = +2 combo" that circulates on auto-generated wikis is close enough to be seductive and wrong enough to mislead. It is not a flat +2 to a combo counter.

Practical rules

  • Two of a tag is usually enough to switch it on. Do not pass on a useful artifact because it "does not match" — check whether its tag is one item away from a threshold.
  • Chalcedony Key changes tag based on where you place it (Sturdy, Ember, Glacier or Magitech). It is a free threshold-filler for whichever combo you are one short on.
  • Alchemy has a Side Bag gotcha. In 1.0.23 TEAM HORAY fixed a case where the Alchemy combo failed to trigger when a tablet was obtained straight into the Side Bag. Items in the Side Bag are inactive; that is a rule, not a bug.
  • Combos change how items drop. Bond Artifacts key off active combos, and Fruit Skewer biases appearance rates. Your current tags shape your future offers.

Not documented anywhere reliable

A full artifact → combo tag mapping, and the activation thresholds for most combos, do not exist in any primary source. The seven thresholds above come from a single player's build guide. Combo level scaling — what level 4 grants versus level 10 — is likewise unpublished. If you find a site listing all of it in a neat table, check whether it can tell you where the numbers came from.
