Sephiria Chapters: How the Story Changes the Tower
Most roguelites express progress as going deeper. Sephiria expresses it as the same place getting different. The tower's floors do not change — Mole Stronghold is always floor 1 — but as chapters advance, the bosses occupying those floors are replaced, and the run extends further.
Understanding that is the difference between "why am I fighting a different boss on floor 4" and knowing exactly what the story just did to your run.
How far each chapter goes
| Chapter | Arrived in | Run reaches |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | at Early Access launch | Floors 1–4 |
| 3 | 0.8.3, Aug 2025 | Floors 1–5 |
| 4 | 0.10.0, Dec 2025 | Floors 1–5.5 |
| 5 | 0.11.0, Mar 2026 | Floor 6 |
| 6 | 1.0, Jul 2026 | Floor 7 |
Chapter 6 shipped with the 1.0 release and contains the game's ending and credits. Before that, Sephiria had no ending — it was in Early Access from April 2025 to July 2026.
What swaps in when
The clearest way to see the structure is per-floor:
Floor 1 (Mole Stronghold) — Mogdi, the Black Hand from Chapter 1. From Chapter 2 it becomes Odner, the Blasting Expert. From Chapter 4, Haz, the Mind-Eater Root.
Floor 2 (Woodlands) — Rataka from Chapter 1, then Lerid, the Shadow Blade from Chapter 2. Lerid was originally the Woodlands mini-boss before being promoted.
Floor 3 (Library) — Erma, the Mad Scientist from Chapter 1, then Pentaxis, Guardian of the Library from Chapter 2. Pentaxis was added in patch 0.7.50, mid-Early-Access.
Floor 4 (Wasteland) — this is the one that matters most. Askard, the Cult Leader in Chapter 1 only; Mutated Askard in Chapter 2 only; Askard's Phantom from Chapter 3 onward.
Floor 5 and beyond — the Guardian Demons of Qliphoth. Kovess on floor 5 from Chapter 3, Kraz on floor 5.5 from Chapter 4. Floor 6 (Deep Cave) holds Qliphoth from Chapter 5. Floor 7 (Qliphoth's Temple) is Chapter 6 only, and holds the three-form final fight.
In Chapter 6 the Guardian pattern changes: only Kovess or Kraz appears on floor 5, chosen at random. You no longer fight both.
The achievements that expire
Because bosses are chapter-locked, several achievements have windows:
- Enlightened Scholar — defeat Askard. Must be done in Chapter 1. 72.4% of players have it.
- Qliphoth Contractor — defeat Mutated Askard. Chapter 2 only. 63.1%.
If you push the story forward before taking these, that specific boss stops spawning. This is the single most common reason players end up with a gap in an otherwise complete achievement list.
The chapter-completion achievements themselves are all hidden, and their descriptions are deliberately oblique — Chapter I is "Meet the Seed," Chapter II is "Meet the Seed again," Chapter III is "Meet three animals," Chapter IV is "Meet the last Hero," Chapter V is "Rescue three animals."
The difficulty curve, in numbers
The stage table's base enemy DEF is the cleanest measure available:
Mole Stronghold 0 → Woodlands 18 → Library 46 → Wasteland 66 → Rooted Cave 79 → Rooted Cave (5.5) 110 → Deep Cave 110 → Qliphoth's Temple 120.
The jump from Woodlands to Library is where most builds first fail — DEF more than doubles, and Library is also where Pentaxis waits from Chapter 2 onward. If your run keeps ending on floor 3, the answer is usually that your artifacts are not at level, not that you need a different weapon.
Steam's completion rates trace the same curve: 89.7% have beaten floor 1's boss, 76.3% floor 3's, 50.6% Pentaxis, 34.1% Haz, and 14.5% have finished the game.
Where the story happens
Outside the tower there is Bunnyville, the Ark, the Tree, and from patch 0.11.5 the Comprehensive Training Grounds. Chapter 5 adds a Place of Recollection version of Bunnyville.
The Obelisk event has a chapter-specific behaviour worth knowing: in Chapter 6, any Obelisk you interact with shows the Old Records lore sequence instead of its usual random buff. If you are chasing story rather than stats in your final chapter, take Obelisks.
Preparing for a chapter transition
The practical preparation is not about the boss. A chapter transition raises the floor on what your build needs to be doing, and builds fail at chapter boundaries mostly because they are half-committed in two directions.
Before pushing a new chapter, check three things: your weapon is at max tier for its tree (rush every anvil), your core artifacts are actually at max level rather than merely present, and you have at least two combos past threshold. A build that satisfies all three usually clears the boundary; one that satisfies two usually does not.
One correction
Chapters in Sephiria have numbers and nothing else. No first-party source gives them titles, themes or subtitles. If you find a page listing "Chapter 5: The Rooted Cave" or similar, that title was invented by whoever wrote the page — the Rooted Cave is a floor name, not a chapter name.

The floor-to-chapter mapping on this page comes from a community data compendium maintained against version 1.0.25, cross-checked against Steam achievement text and patch notes. TEAM HORAY has never published it. Whether Kovess and Kraz are two distinct entities rather than one renamed is supported by the Gatekeeper of the Mind achievement wording — "defeat the second Guardian Demon" — but is not directly stated by the developer.
